To squeeze back onto topic - the new copied data file was reduced in size to half the corrupted data file. Lesson learned - don't delete files unless you know what your doing and if you do delete files and your Quicken data file suddenly doubles in size you need to take immediate action. Can't open a.qdf file? When you double-click a file to open it, Windows examines the filename extension. If Windows recognizes the filename extension, it opens the file in the program that is associated with that filename extension. While in Quicken, click File in the menu. Click File Operations. Click Find Quicken Files. From here, you can search for all Quicken files or specify a specific Quicken data file name. You can also select the device to search if you save your Quicken data files somewhere other than your hard drive, such as a USB drive, CD, DVD or other data storage. Opening QDF Files. Intuit owns Quicken, as well as QuickBooks. They have an online version too, descriptively called QuickBooks Online. The result of all this was that I had Reckon files, with a.QDF extension – but an export of the files were also provided, and they had a.RKN file extension instead. If you want to view these files.
If you ever have a problem in Quicken where you cannot backup your QDF data file, and you cannot even copy your QDF data file, then you may want to try the following.
This allowed me to save my mom’s Quicken data after nothing else worked (i.e. validate/repair did not work) and all the other solutions I found online did not work.
This particular problem was caused by bad blocks on a failing SSD, but it could have just as easily been a bad HDD. Kirk franklin revolution album. The issue was that the bad blocks were at approximately 230MB into the file. That meant that any copying or backing up would fail right there as well, resulting in a failure notice in Quicken and an incomplete backup/copy. Likewise, even a simple Windows file copy attempt would faily.
Thankfully, by using Force-Copy as shown below I was able to copy/recover the QDF file, validate it and then start using it again with very minimal data loss (about 96KB).
If you have questions about this process, feel free to comment below and I will try to help! 🙂
Force-Copy copied the file! Alucard in the tokyo game show trailer.

GUI Alternative
If you prefer a more graphical approach to recovering/copying files, you may want to check into Roadkil’s Unstoppable Copier. Force-Copy is very precise and returns the absolute most recoverable data, Unstoppable copier is somewhat more approachable in its usage. See screenshots below…
